Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord and those most at risk are infants, young children, teenagers and young adults. A recent survey commissioned by the Meningitis Trust revealed that half of all parents cannot accurately name three symptoms of meningitis. Recognising the symptoms and acting quickly saves lives.
There are approximately 4,000 cases of meningitis per year in the UK, 1 in 10 of those will die. While deafness is the most common form of permanent damage, in severe cases (where septicaemia has occurred) fingers, toes and limbs may need to be amputated.
No one knows who or when meningitis and septicaemia will strike. But knowing that you have good information and the Arc close at hand in your medicine cupboard will help you when you most need it.
