How to Use
PREPARATION
- Wash your hands.
- Open the clinical box and remove a perforated
thermometer strip. - Tear away 1 clinical thermometer at the perforation.
- Peel apart the wrapper end by the arrow. Remove
thermometer by pulling on the handle. - Discard wrapper
TAKING THE ORAL TEMPERATURE – THE PATIENT
- Have patient open mouth and place the grid end of the
thermometer far back in mouth under tongue. The grid
end of the thermometer should be positioned in the
“heat pocket” as per the diagram on the left. - Make sure patient’s mouth is fully closed and they are
breathing through their nose. - With mouth closed, patient should be instructed to press
their tongue against the thermometer. This helps the
thermometer to quickly warm up to body temperature.
TAKING THE TEMPERATURE – THE TIMING
- Begin timing the temperature. Wait at least 60 seconds.
- If you require reading glasses to see the thermometer’s
scale, then have them ready for use. - After at least 60 seconds has elapsed, remove
thermometer from patient’s mouth. - READ THE TEMPERATURE SCALE IMMEDIATELY
(the thermometer will begin to reset itself when removed
from the mouth). - If necessary, re-take the temperature, using same unit
(for the same patient only).
READING THE THERMOMETER
- Remove thermometer from patient’s mouth.
- Read & note the last black dot in grid tip of thermometer.
- This last black dot is the oral temperature reading.
HOW TO READ AND INTERPERET THE THERMOMETER GRID
- Each thermometer has a grid of temperature dots.
- Each dot represents a different temperature and turns
black when a specific temperature is reached for that dot. - The black dot with the highest temperature represents
the patient’s oral temperature.
THERMOMETER GRID IN DETAIL
- Rows are in one-half degree C. increments.
- Columns are in 1/10th of a degree C. increments.
- The black dot with the highest temperature is the actual
oral temperature reading.
NOTE THE TEMPERATURE – WRITTEN RECORD
- If you need a written record of the temperature,
record it now. - If the temperature needs to be re-taken, put the same
thermometer in the same patient’s mouth and repeat
the process. - When finished, discard thermometer.
Axillary Temperature Measurement
(under arm)
- Place the dot end of the thermometer at the fold in the
patient’s armpit, with the dot grid against the torso. - The handle of the thermometer should point toward the
patient’s feet, parallel with the body. - Instruct the patient to close their arm to hold the
thermometer in place. - Wait at least 3 minutes.
Rectal Temperature Measurement
- Insert the EZEtemp Oral Thermometer into the rectal
sheath, with the dot end of the thermometer placed at the
rounded end of the sheath. - Insert the rounded end of the rectal sheath into the rectum
until the dot-matrix and all of the numbers are completely
covered. - Wait at least 3 minutes.
- Remove sheath/thermometer and READ IMMEDIATELY.
