Avance protects acute and chronic wounds with a silver shield. Bacti-Shield technology bonds a silver compound into the dressing. The silver acts as a broad spectrum anti-microbial which will kill the majority of the bacteria which cause problems in wound healing.
For bacterial control
Lab tests showed Avance dressings reduced levels of two representative strains of MRSA from 1,000,000 bacteria to undetectable levels within 24 hours (2).
For wound protection
During a recent multi-patient study on difficult-to-heal wounds, NONE of the wounds developed localised infection (1).
For quicker healing
Two patients with non-healing grade 3 diabetic pressure sores – both presenting for two years – showed significant improvement within four weeks of using Avance (1,3).
For patient comfort
After a multi-patient study, patients wanted to continue using Avance, rating it as very comfortable. Patients also experienced marked reduction in pain levels during treatment with Avance (1).
For exuding wounds
Avance and Avance A dressings offer sophisticated exudate management to suit all but the heaviest exuding wounds. For difficult areas Avance A dressings have a self-adhesive border to keep the dressing in place in awkward areas.
How to apply Avance and Avance A
1. Irrigate the wound if it is contaminated or contains sloughy or necrotic material. It is important that it is cleansed thoroughly with normal saline (e.g. Steripod), preferably at body temperature, and the surrounding skin is dried, while leaving the surface of the wounds moist.
2. Select an Avance dressing which will overlap the edges of the wound by 2–3cm. Peel open the sterile packaging and take out the dressing.
3. Place the dressing directly onto the wound surface with the pink side facing up.
4. Secure the dressing with tape at the edges to provide a closed seal around the wound. Take care not to cover the dressing entirely with tape or film because this would prevent the evaporation of moisture and impair the dressing’s effectiveness. Alternatively, secure the dressing with an appropriate bandage (e.g. Tubifast). Take care to provide a closed seal around the wound, particularly in difficult areas such as joints. Compression bandaging may be applied if required for the condition.
To apply Avance A dressings, follow steps 1 and 2, then place the dressing over the wound and gently smooth the adhesive border into position. Remove the second sheet of backing paper and smooth the adhesive border gently into position, ensuring complete contact all around the wound to avoid leakage.
Benefits of Use
- Lab tests prove that, using Bacti-Shield technology, Avance dressings can control MRSA. The dressings reduced levels of two representative strains of MRSA from 1,000,000 bacteria to non-detectable levels within 24 hours (2).
- Avance dressings can protect acute and chronic wounds from other bacteria. Lab tests show Avance dressings kill the following organisms within 24 hours: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, S. pyogenes, E. coli; and within 48 hours: E. faecalis (2).
- Avance improves wound healing. Two patients with long-term non-healing wounds showed significant improvement after only four weeks using Avance (1).
- In a poster presented at the EWMA conference 2001, the Wound Healing Research Unit at Cardiff quoted: “the dressing proved to be comfortable and user-friendly with a marked effect on pain reduction.” (1).

NOTE: Do not cover Avance with occlusive films or tapes, as these reduce water vapour loss, which may impair the effectiveness of the dressing.
