Hydrofluoric acid is used in many labs and in electroplating, etching, oil refining, iron and steel manufacture, ceramics and aerospace.

It is significantly more hazardous than many other acids in that it readily penetrates the skin causing burns, destroying soft tissue and de calcifying bones. Chemical burns from HF are typically very painful and slow to heal.

Because of the ability of HF to produce delayed serious tissue damage all contact should receive immediate first aid treatment with Calcium Gluconate antidote gel followed by medical evaluation.

It is recommended that all personnel likely to come into contact with hydrofluoric acid have quick access to a first aid kit containing Calcium Gluconate Gel and to a water supply or shower.
